DETROIT – There are many ways that technology is coming together to make life easier for drivers, and more recently MI dealers may have heard the news as RelayRides, OnStar and General Motors have come together to bring a new wave of rental vehicles to the industry.

In June 2010, RelayRides launched its peer-to-peer car sharing in Boston and two years later it is a nationwide program. It allows for a key-exchange between renters and owners so both can enjoy the benefits of car sharing. Currently RelayRides offers vehicle owners a $1 million insurance policy for the duration of the rental as well as a policy for $300,000 for renters in the program.

Now with General Motors combining with OnStar, RelayRides can share its program with even more owners and potential renters.

“General Motors, through OnStar, and RelayRides have joined forces to create an entirely new mobility solution for U.S. drivers interested in more affordable, sustainable and collaborative automobile options,” said Nick Pudar vice president OnStar Strategy and New Business Development. “Our exclusive relationship with RelayRides provides an exciting new choice: the first automobiles to run on collaborative consumption.”

OnStar subscribers can now rent their idle vehicles through the RelayRides marketplace as an easier way to rent. MI dealers may want to know how the three companies can work together. RelayRides’ renters can make their arrangements with the owners of the model they want to rent and will be able to unlock their reserved OnStar-enabled cars by using their smart phones.

This provides for more security, reliability and accessibility for RealyRides members in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac models. With OnStar, drivers will not need to add any expensive aftermarket hardware or have to deliver keys. The solutions between the three companies makes it easy for a driver to enjoy an extra income source without the hassle of normal car renting.
