Car Recalls Update: GM Recalls Almost 27,000 Vehicles

January 18th, 2011

GM Recall will include over 26,000 vehicles due to a possible rear axle pin defect.

DETROIT, M.I. – Car recalls going into effect on or before Jan. 25 have been announced by General Motors. The estimated number of vehicles that are included in this recall are 26,751. This number includes the three makes that are potentially affected by the defect: Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

The exact vehicle models that may be affected in the car recalls include the 2011:

  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Cadillac Escalade ESV 1500
  • Cadillac Escalade EXT 1500
  • Chevrolet Avalanche 1500
  • Chevrolet Colorado
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • Chevrolet Suburban 1500
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • GMC Canyon
  • GMC Sierra 1500
  • GMC Yukon
  • GMC Yukon XL 1500

The problem that prompted the GM car recalls was the improper heat treatment applied to the rear axle cross pins. Without the right treatment, the pins could fracture and shift out of their regular position, which can cause the rear axle to lock and the driver to lose the ability to maintain the directional control of the vehicle. An unexpected crash could occur if control is lost.

Once General Motors had realized there may be a problem with the pins, the corporation began an investigation. They found there were certain pins that had not been identified through an inspection process.

Owners are urged to bring in their vehicles if they fall within the list of GM car recalls. Dealers will install a new rear axle cross pin at no charge to the owner.

If any owners have any questions they can reach any of the manufacturers: Cadillac 1-866-982-2339, Chevrolet 1-800-630-2438 and GMC 1-866-996-9463. Or they can visit the GM owner center at www.gmownercenter.com.
